Why I created this WordPress plugin

If you sell on Easy Digital Downloads and want to accept Bitcoin, you have three real options today. Each one has a real cost:

SaaS gateways (Plisio, NOWPayments, Coinbase Commerce, BitPay) take 0.5–1.5% of every sale, forever. Your funds pass through their custody. Your API keys can be revoked.
BTCPay Server is excellent, but requires running a Bitcoin node on a VPS. Realistically a weekend of setup if you’ve never done it.
Legacy WordPress Bitcoin plugins are either broken on EDD 3.x or never integrated well with EDD’s order model.

EDD BTC Direct is the fourth option.

How it works

Paste your wallet’s extended public key. Any modern Bitcoin wallet works: Sparrow, Electrum, Ledger, Trezor, BlueWallet. Both xpub and zpub
formats are supported.
Verify the first derived address. The plugin shows the address it will use for the first payment. You compare with what your wallet shows. Match = setup correct.
Activate Bitcoin (Direct) in EDD Payments. It appears alongside Stripe, PayPal, and Bank Transfer at checkout.
Customers pay you directly. At checkout they see a payment page with address, amount, QR code, and countdown. When the transaction confirms
on chain, the EDD order is marked complete.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you ever see my private keys?

No. The plugin only ever receives your wallet’s extended public key (xpub
or zpub). Private keys stay in your wallet, on your devices. Even a complete compromise of your WordPress site cannot drain your funds.

Zero commissions? Really?

Yes.

Do I need to run a Bitcoin node?

No. The plugin queries mempool.space, a free, public, key-less blockchain API, to confirm payments. You can optionally point it to a self-hosted mempool.space instance for full sovereignty, but it’s not required.

What if mempool.space is unreachable?

Bitcoin payments arrive in your wallet regardless, the blockchain is independent of any single API provider. The plugin retries on the next cron tick. If a payment window expires before confirmation, the order goes into expired state but the BTC is in your wallet; you can verify manually and reconcile.

How do I refund a Bitcoin order?

Bitcoin doesn’t support chargebacks. When you mark an EDD order refunded, the plugin posts an order note with the exact amount and the customer’s receiving address so you can send the refund manually. The plugin never moves BTC for you, that’s a security boundary you keep.

What about recurring subscriptions?

On-chain Bitcoin cannot auto-renew. EDD BTC Direct cleanly opts out of carts containing EDD Recurring items, so customers attempting subscription purchases don’t see Bitcoin as an option. Initial purchases of one-shot products work normally.

Which wallets are supported?

Any wallet that exports an extended public key. Verified with Sparrow, Electrum, BlueWallet, Trezor (via Suite), Ledger (via Live), Specter.
Wallets that don’t expose an xpub (Exodus, Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet) are not supported directly – you can import their seed into Sparrow or Electrum to obtain the xpub.
